A folk-country song. I believe it is both the least-country on the album and the most emotional. It was inspired by words Shelton Williams, better known as Hank III, told me, when I met him after a show in Santa Cruz, California.
I asked him to sign my guitar and then I asked him if I could sing him one of his songs. He gave a weary sigh, told me he was very tired and maybe a verse or two. I told him I'd hurry. I sang only a few bars but he gave me a look that I'll forever cherish and told me "Keep doing what you're doing." Thanks a lot Hank, God Bless!
lyrics
Doctor told me son you better say goodbye
Any day now you know that you could die
but I refuse to live my life in fear
A rich man's eatin' as a poor man's looking on
will anybody even care when he's gone
and I don't mean to add a moral to this song
but it's wrong
A single father holds a child in arms
I've seen that look before and he don't know where he's going
and it'll take all the strength he has to go on
and I'll keep on keepin' on
I'll keep on keepin' on
I walked outside today with a smile upon my face
I could disappear from the world without a trace
maybe I will
maybe I won't
and maybe I'm going home
but I'll keep on keepin' on
I'll keep on keepin' on
I'll keep on keepin' on
